Description
2/10/26 - This is an original example of the extraordinarily rare Colt Model 1907 pistol that is one of only 207 ever produced for U.S. military field trials. As Colt experimented with designs for a larger caliber alternative to the previous .38 designs, the 1907 was entered into military trials along with the DWM Luger and the Savage 1907. The 1907 was essentially a modified Model 1905, with requested changes that included a spur hammer, vertical case ejection, grip safety, loaded chamber indicator and more. This particular piece is a 2nd variation example with the tanged grip safety and slightly lower ejection port. Unfortunately, the 1907 (or 1905 Army Contract or 05/07) saw a significant amount of failures and was not further considered for adoption.
Given these generally saw extensive use and testing, the few surviving examples are often found in very worn condition so despite the visible finish loss, this is a very nice example of a Model 1907. The bluing is original with roughly 70% remaining, and the most notable areas of finish loss found on the grip straps. Nice fire blue remains on the grip safety and trigger. The bore has good rifling with minor frost throughout. Very nice, original grips with minor handling wear. Unmarked, blued magazine. Somewhat oddly, this particular example has had the original serial number peened and a new one applied to the right side frame. A '5' is visible under the peen marks, though we cannot say if this was serial number '5' or the '5' was part of a larger number. This work does appear to be factory or arsenal work, though we were unable to find an exact explanation for this issue.
