Description
8/5/25 - This is an example of a British production Metford Pattern 1888 Type II bayonet and scabbard made sometime in the 1890's. The handle and crossguard of the bayonet are in good shape with nice wood for the age and metal that has some light patina and clear stampings. There is a thin crack going down the left wooden grip, however. The spine of the blade is stamped "16L". The blade looks to be untampered with no signs of polishing or sharpening. It does show some spots of dark discoloration throughout but it is a nice blade overall. The blade is marked with a crown VR and the date of manufacture (Extremely hard to make out due to the number of stampings). Th eother side of the blade is stamped with an arrow "WD" and other markings. The scabbard has thinnign over all metal parts as is expected with its old age. There is a serial number stamped and a "B17" proof on the metal parts as well. The leather part of the scabbard is rather nice with tight stitching and mild wear. The bayonet and scabbard do not match.
