Description
02/20/26 - This is a rare example of a Walther PP Super issued (sometime between 1975-78) to the German Police located in Rheinland-Pfalz, indicated on the right side of the trigger guard by the encircled R-P marking. Less than 2500, out of a total production of 12,400 were issued to the Rheinland-Pfalz police over a three year period from 75-78. This example comes with its original matching numbered box, manual, cleaning rod, and 4 original magazines. The pistol is all matching (serialized on slide and frame), is chambered in the rare 9x18 Police cartridge, was manufactured in 1975, and retains about 95% original blue, with wear on along the bottom edge of the front grip strap and tang, with a few tiny dots of surface oxidation scattered on the rest of the front strap. Some wear on the high edges of the slide and around the muzzle, and one spot of finish loss on the top round of the right side of the slide in front of the rear sight. Well fitting original grips are in very good shape, with a few small scattered dings and handling marks. Bore is shiny with sharp rifling, and just a bit of frost in the grooves. Flawless mechanics.

The Walther PP Super pistol came into existence circa 1972, as a proposed service handgun for West German police. At that period, German police looked for a new standard handgun and ammunition, to replace obsolete and underpowered pistols then in service. During the early 1970s there was much debate about a new service cartridge, and two major contenders were the already famous 9x19mm Luger/Parabellum, and the relatively new 9×18 Police cartridge. The 9×18 Police cartridge has been based on pre-WW2 9x18mm Ultra ammunition, developed in Germany by the Geco and Walther on request from Luftwaffe (German Air Forces). The 9×18 cartridge offered about a maximum power which could be used in relatively compact and lightweight blowback pistols. This, in turn, allowed these pistols to be simpler and less expensive than locked-breech 9x19mm pistols. Recognizing these advantages of 9×18 ammunition, the Walther company developed a police pistol, roughly based on the famous Walther PP pistol, and called it PP Super.
