Description
1/7/26 - This is an extraordinarily early and rare Colt Government Model 1911 from 1912. It's a three digit example, obviously one of the first 1,000 ever produced! What makes this pistol especially rare, though, is the inscription on the mainspring housing. It reads, "C.L. Stockdell, From The Bunch". Per Clawson's book, the Colt archives confirm that this pistol was a factory order shipped directly to Stockdell. The pistol is in fantastic condition, with beautiful peacock blue remaining on the hammer, slide stop, safety, mag release and trigger. There is minor finish loss on the front strap and trigger guard, and a few surface scratches on the slide. The original blue rates at 94-96%, exceptional for a 3-digit example. The pistol is an original example aside from the barrel, which is a later replacement. The magazine is a WW1-era example with lanyard ring and two-tone finish. The listing includes a vintage display case period original with vintage ammo.
We believe 'C.L. Stockdell refers to a Clarence Low Stockdell. We weren't able to find much information about him, but it appears he was a Lieutenant in 1908, and later a Major in 1910 with the Georgia National Guard. If anyone is able to find more information about him, feel free to share!
