Description

10/9/25 - This is a scarce 1943 Winchester Model 1897 trench shotgun in the correct WWII era range with a proper 20" 1942-dated barrel. Correct features include CYL marking along with U.S. flaming bomb proof stamp. The walnut stock is stamped with GHD and crossed cannon cartouche, with proper inletted rear sling swivel, a checkered Winchester steel buttplate, an unmarked WWII type action bar, and a magazine tube drilled for two screw sets. The four column, 19 row heat shield and bayonet adapter is refinished and appears replaced, and the bayonet lug is unmarked, where most originals are W marked. A moved front sight bead indent at the muzzle suggests this started life as a martially proofed riot gun that was later converted, though it could also be a correct military trench gun with a replaced and refinished shield. Includes a genuine Remington 1917 bayonet with scabbard and a reproduction sling. The metal condition is about 80 percent original blue, with scattered patina and spotty oxidation in several areas, and honest handling wear and surface scratching throughout. The wood is mostly excellent, with light handling marks but sharp markings. A small crack is present on the right side of the slide handle. The mechanics are excellent, and the pump action runs smoothly. The bore is excellent.

The Model 1897 earned its reputation as a trench shotgun in World War I and continued in World War II for close quarters fighting and guard duty. Trench guns combined a 20" barrel with a ventilated heat shield, bayonet lug, and sling swivels, along with U.S. and ordnance acceptance marks. Riot guns shared the short cylinder barrel but lacked the shield and lug, which is why sight bead and mounting hole placement is critical for evaluating conversions.
