Description
10/15/25- This is an original example of the German M1898/05 n/A “Butcher” Sawback Bayonet, the most recognizable and widely issued bayonet of the First World War, designed for use with the Gewehr 98 rifle. The massive 14.5-inch blade has the distinctive wide profile that gives this pattern its nickname, and this later neuer Art model properly lacks the earlier muzzle ring and features a steel flash guard on the grip spine. The blade is in great shape with a nearly intact edge profile, mostly clean and razor sharp saw teeth, and a uniform bare metal surface mostly free of visible damage. It has, however, been significantly buffed and polished, leaving the maker mark, Deutsche Maschinenfabrik AG of Duisburg, faint and partially faded off on the ricasso, though the 1916 date and proof stamp remain crisp on the spine. There are a couple minuscule dots of rust along the left edge adjacent to the saw teeth, and some faint scabbard wear streaks near the tip. Light buffing artifacts are visible under close inspection, though mostly clean in hand. The grooved wood grips show minor dings and handling marks but no cracks, chips, or repairs, and the hilt and pommel retain an even aged patina with proper proofs. The steel scabbard remains in good condition with small dings and patches of patina throughout.
