Description
2/11/26 - This is a very nice, honest example of the rare French RSC Model 1917 rifle. The RSC 1917, also known as the FSA1917, is the only semi-automatic rifle model to see significant front line infantry use during World War I. This is a full-size example (not to be mistaken with the shorter Mle 1918), and is a 2nd variation example with hold open installed on the right side of the receiver. These load from beneath the receiver with a proprietary en bloc clip that was loaded into the hinged magazine. The RSC Model 1917 was widely distributed among French infantrymen in the trenches during late WW1. Troops found that the gas port required extra attention to cleaning due to powder fouling. The bolt could be manually cycled by pulling and pushing a handle, allowing soldiers to use it as a straight pull rifle when conserving ammunition or in muddy trench environments, where semi automatic reliability was compromised. The Model 1917 and the updated Model 1918 were phased out in the mid-1920s after seeing service in the Rif War, with the majority being stripped of their gas hardware and converted to straight pull repeaters. As a result, many of these are no longer found in semi-auto configuration, but this example remains as originally designed.
CONDITION
Matching numbered parts are visible on the receiver, bolt handle, stock, and barrel. The original finish shows the vast majority of the blue remains intact but that oxidation and patina are visible throughout. On each side of the magazine, there is a small swipe of tan paint but we aren't sure why this was done. The original stock shows handling wear and a couple of notable gouges, but no cracks or structural issues. The cartouche on the right side remains fairly crisp and visible, and reads "C.S. / JUIN / M / 1917' in the outer ring with 'MA' inside the center ring. Receiver is marked 'MA. T1917'. Terrific bore - shiny with strong rifling. Period leather sling included.
The Rifle has the correct Gas block and elbow to function properly.
PROVENANCE
This listing includes a notarized letter from the family of the veteran that brought the rifle back. It states that it was captured by Charles Wilson Fisher and brought back to Oakland, CA after the war.
