Description

2/27/26- For sale is a very unusual and rare ZB-26 parts kit with Chinese markings. The ZB-26 was a popular export model of light machinegun in the interwar period and the ZB-26 and its clones were adopted in various countries like China, the UK, the Czech Republic, and others. This ZB-26 is very unique because it is chambered in 6.5mm Japanese rather than the standard 8mm Mauser and has Chinese characters indicating safe or fire. The original pattern of the ZB-26 was exported to China and used by all sides of the Civil War and following Japanese invasion, but these guns were chambered in the original 8mm Mauser configuration. The Japanese clone, the Type 96, was slightly different and therefore would not be confused for a ZB-26. This mysterious ZB-26 is therefore not an originally configured export model, likely not a native Chinese production because it is chambered in a Japanese caliber, and most likely not a Japanese production because it has Chinese characters for the safety and is not a standardized Japanese design. Research indicates that the most likely story for this gun is that Japanese businessmen in occupied Manchuria produced a local variant of the ZB-26 and hoped to have it adopted by the Japanese Army but were ultimately unsuccessful. Another possibility is that China produced a ZB-26 variant using Japanese tooling after the war, but both origins are unclear, making this a very rare and unusual kit!

As for the kit itself, it includes a buttstock and trigger assembly, cut receiver, bolt and firing pin, barrel, gas tube, gas tube shroud and bipod, charging handle, and several small pieces. The serial number "467" has been observed on 18 different parts including bolt, barrel, and stock assembly. The only part with a different number is the forward gas tube, which is numbered "5023". The bolt head will seat a 6.5mm Japanese round perfectly and the chamber will seat a 6.5mm Japanese round perfectly, while the standard 8mm Mauser round leaves about half an inch of the case out of the chamber, another indication of the unusual caliber of this weapon. The barrel has some dirt but the rifling looks strong and there is minimal corrosion, rating about an 8/10. The metal parts are military blued with various levels of wear and patina but there is no serious damage, deep scrapes, or heavy rust. The wooden parts have a nice deep color to them. There is notable wear and scraping on the wood. There is a small crack in the carrying handle and in both sides of the pistol grip. There are two chips missing from the pistol grip. The kit also includes one 6.5mm Japanese round just to test chambering and fit. Overall in very good condition and a very unusual find!
