Description
5/15/24 - This is an original US M1880 military Entrenching Tool. These were experimental multi-use tools meant to be both an entrenching shovel as well as a field knife. Measures about 13 inches overall with a blade that's about 8 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. The blade has light surface oxidation and spotty discoloration, as well as normal scabbard rub wear and micro-scratching. One end of the edge is rounded upward to create a small backstop / shovel, while the other edge is sharp and shows signs of sharpening. The steel guard bar has similar patina but no excessive wear. Fitted with a ribbed wood handle that's in excellent condition, and US stamped at the top, just below the steel throat. The base of the handle has a small hole from a lanyard that was previously attached. The original sheath has a brass mouth and leather covered steel body. Light surface scuffs but no major issues, and stamped with a crisp U.S. marking on the front corner. Most examples today are in far worse condition, making this a truly excellent example.Specifications
