SOLD - Arisaka Type 97 Sniper Scope and Case 2.5x10

7/17/24 - This is an Arisaka Type 97 sniper scope from the WW2 era. The Kokura Arsenal produced ~8000 Type 97 rifles between 1937-1939. These examples are distinctive from the more common (~14,500 manufactured) Nagoya Arsenal scopes in that they lack the "Circle Y" proof, but do have a serial number. This one appears to be an unissued scope that has had an (out of range) serial number added post-factory and offset of where they are normally stamped (above the pivot point of the lever). The 2.5 power scope for the Type 97 looks externally like the Type 99, but the reticule grid is calibrated for 6.5mm. Japan had the most advanced sniper rifle reticle design in WWII, with modern features such as bullet drop compensation and stadia range finding similar to the soviet SVD reticle design that came out some 25 years later. This example in excellent overall condition, with most of its finish remaining, and crystal clear optics. The rubber eye piece has worn away, and there is mild oxidation on the part of the mount that attaches to the rifle. A few handling marks and dings here and there. Mount is marked on the left with a symbol "Dat-Chaku", which means "to remove", on the right with a symbol "so-chaku", which means "attach", and on the top with the series number 60.68. The top of the scope is marked "J.E.S" , short for Japan Engineering Standard, which identifies the thread pattern on the screws, and maker marked with a star on Crescent symbol, which is likely the Japanese optics company Nishimura. The cutout on the mount is marked with an assembly number '11'. Comes with nice period-correct leather scope case, which has a broken closure strap and is missing most of the stitching around the bottom of the tube and some more in the lid. Age related wear on the leather throughout, but the case still has excellent pliability and is in very good condition overall.
