Description
1/27/25 - This is a nice example of a WW2 2nd Chemical Battalion insignia Pin. The 2nd Chemical Battalion were known as the Red Dragons as well as the Hell Fire Boys. During WW2 the battalion took part in the Invasion of Italy, Naples, Rome, Southern France, Germany, as well as fighting during the Battle of the Bulge. One interesting episode in the 2nd Chemical Battalion's history was that in the town of Traunstein, Germany they captured a Luftwaffe deserter by the name of Joseph Ratzinger. This young Luftwaffe deserter would go on to become Pope Benedict XVI. During the war the 2nd Chemical Battalion saw first hand the atrocities committed by the Nazis as they took part in the Liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. After the German surrender, the 2nd Chemical Battalion went on to secure and guard the chemical munitions of the defeated Germans, these munitions included the Zyklon B used at the very camp they helped to liberate.Specifications
