Description

11/21/24 - This is a great example of a WW2 Japanese model 1883 naval sword with portepee. These swords were known in Japan as Kyu-Gunto and were used by the Army, Cavalry, and Naval officer's from the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 till WW2. This example being the naval variant of this sword. This sword is in great overall condition. The blade maintains its polished finish, and has only minor scabbard wear. There are no signs of sharpening on the blade. The handle and guard on this sword are made of brass and while there is some darkening patina throughout, these fittings have no major dents or damage to them. The handle on this sword is also in great condition and still maintains is lacquered shark skin wrap. The scabbard on this sword is leather with brass fittings. The leather is cracking on the scabbard but is still intact. The brass fittings on the scabbard are in great shape with no dents or damage, but have lost most of what appears to have been a gold colored plating. Given the quality of this scabbard, this sword is in what would be considered a "Parade" or "Dress" configuration and would have been worn by the sailor on those occasions when they wanted to look their best.
