Description

12/1/25-  For sale is an 1835 dated Springfield foot artillery sword. The sword is clearly modeled after the ancient Roman gladius, making it a clear example of early America's fascination with the ancient world. The blade has some patina and wear but no serious damage or chips. One side is stamped with "United States 1835" and the other side is marked with an American eagle followed by "N. P. Ames Springfield". Some of the patina makes the stampings slightly hard to see but they are still fully present on the blade. The handle is all brass with a scale pattern and an American eagle on each side of the pommel. The scabbard is hard leather with brass fittings on the top and bottom. There is very slight age-related cracking to the leather. The scabbard comes with the original cloth/leather frog and belt. The material of the belt and frog is dry and stiff with a crack at one point. There are no markings on the belt. It's a very nice sword and scabbard and a rare and hard to find belt. Overall in very good condition.
