Description
3/17/26- For sale is a 1915 dated German sawback bayonet that has had its teeth removed. The sawback bayonet was the focus of significant propaganda and misinformation even to the present day, with the Allies calling it a war crime and an unusually cruel weapon, even though it was intended more as a utility tool than a weapon. In response, some German units ground the saw teeth off of their bayonets to convert them to standard bayonets. The blade has a mix of patina and bluing along with multiple small dings and dents, possibly from hard use. There is a noticeable indentation along the spine of the blade, around 4mm below the flat line, indicating a deep grind along about 11 inches of the blade where a sawback would have been. The grinding is smooth and has aged patina, indicating it was professionally done in the period. The blade is marked "V. C. Schilling, Suhl" and the spine has the imperial crown over the year mark 15. The dark wooden handles have moderate wear but no cracking or serious damage. The scabbard has some wear and finish loss, especially along the edges. Overall in very good condition and comes with an interesting historical story!
