Description
10/30/26 - This is a fascinating 14" typewriter manufactured by Underwood in mid-1936. The fine craftsmanship on this unique device was hard to come by and only affordable to those with disposable income as it was produced during the Great Depression. These typewriters were known for their smooth and accurate functionality, making them used on some of the most important or unique projects. The 14" carriage on this unit gives the user the ability to accommodate a much larger selection of paper. The carriage size in combination with the smaller-than-usual 12-pitch font size made the capabilities of this Underwood much more expansive than many other options. All features appear to work as intended and have generally smooth operation. The keys can stick at times, however we believe that this can be resolved with some grease or oil. Overall this is a fascinating piece of history.
The original black finish on this typewriter is still mostly present and shows very little actual wear. There are some areas that have lost their luster and could benefit from some cleaning, though there seems to be very little patina or surface rust. The left side of the body has "WPA 111721" written on it, which we believe is shorthand for "Wide Paper Accordance" to note that this device could handle larger ledger paper, with the numbers that follow being a unit number. The right side of the frame has the serial number stamped, "4542476-14" which puts the production of this unit around mid-1936. All of the original key caps are still present and are in good condition. A well-kept Depression-era Underwood with the wide 14" carriage and all of its original key caps.
