Description
11/4/26 - This is a late 19th century Ottoman officer's cartouche box (pouch). Ornate cartouche boxes like this were worn on a cross belt by officers as part of their dress uniform, having evolved from the practical cartridge boxes carried in earlier eras into a largely ceremonial accoutrement. The shaped gilt brass flap features the Ottoman crescent and star set within a laurel wreath, surrounded by a finely embossed foliate border. The body is red leather with gilt brass end mounts and an engraved gilt brass panel on the back, with a ring and swivel clip on each side for attaching the belt and an acorn finial closure stud. The gilt has retained much of its color, with some spots of verdigris on the face of the flap. The red leather shows wear and age throughout, with scuffing, staining, and tears and loss along the edges of the flap lining and body. An honest 19th century Ottoman officer's cartouche box that still displays well.
