Description

6/25/26 - This is a 7.5" First Generation Colt Single Action Army revolver from 1904. It is completely matching and has all the proper markings. According to our consignor, this gun may have a possible connection to Cole Younger. Cole Younger (born Thomas Coleman Younger) was one of the most famous outlaws of the American Old West. He is best known as a leader of the infamous James–Younger Gang, which robbed banks, trains, and stagecoaches in the years following the American Civil War. Included with the gun is a hand-written letter from the consignor's great grandmother's both, Dan Conklin (written in 1951). The letter is translated/written out below. In the letter, he explains the possible connection to Cole. Obviously this connection is thin and cannot be proven. It is priced accordingly and would be much higher if one could prove it. In any case, the gun is in fair condition overall. The whole gun is covered in honest brown "attic" patina. No major damage. There is a small ding in the front sight blade. Fitted with worn period-correct hard rubber grips - there are some initials scratched into the inside that we can't make any sense of. The bore has some rifling remaining, but there is obvious pitting and oxidation throughout. Fully functional.

Translation of the letter:

"Jackson, Tennessee

July 4, 1951

Dear Sister, Husband and All,

A few lines this P.M. I am glad Harold arrived from O.K. and I am sure he enjoyed his trip. There is some nice country around here and some not so good. Of course the crop farming is different. But it has been raining here a lot and most of the farmers cannot get in the fields to work their crop but that is the way it goes in or over. I had a letter from Edna and she says it is so wet there that they cannot harvest their oats and wheat. I have to go up there in a couple of weeks if I can.

Now about the old Colt 45 I have. I had an old gun collector to buy it, he offered me $75 for it. He said if he could buy it at that he would have it silvered and it would be worth $200. I told him I would take $100 and he said he would be back.

Now I will try to tell you about the gun. Billie’s Mother got it from her Mother. Her Mother and Cole Younger were brother and sister. Cole gave the gun to Billie’s grandma when she was fifteen years old and she was very old when she passed away. 92 years old but spry and full of fire. But the gun has always had good care. Old Granny as we called her, was born and raised in East Tennessee in the mountains. She could tell some great tales about the James brothers gang. If I would of known then what I know now about old guns like that I would have gotten old Granny’s sworn statement but I didn’t think about the validation of it then. Now the only way I could send it to you and Parker is by express. You can’t send a gun by parcel post and rate is high by express. I thought I might send it to you and Parker could give me what he thought it would be worth for collections. There is no gun of its kind that has the history in back of it which is the truth as it has that I know.

Well I will bring this to a close for this time it is now 10:30 p.m.

Love to all and best wishes.

Dan

Added note - This letter is from Daniel Bone Conklin brother of Pauline Conklin Forsaith. Mars, PA, December 1951. Dan sent this gun to my son, Parker, as a keepsake."
