Boxed C.G. Haenel Schmeisser Model 1

8/4/26 - This is a boxed Haenel Schmeisser Model 1 pistol, chambered in 6.35mm (.25 ACP). C.G. Haenel of Suhl was founded in 1840 by Carl Gottlieb Haenel. After the First World War, Hugo Schmeisser, already known for his work at Bergmann on the MP18.1, came into Haenel with his brother Hans and put their pocket-pistol patents into production; the gun was on the market by 1920 as the Schmeisserpistole. It builds on ideas from their father Louis Schmeisser's Dreyse vest-pocket pistols, with an open-top breech block, a cocking pin at the rear when the striker is charged, and a magazine safety system meant to keep the mag locked until the lever is on safe. The Model 1 name itself is the later label for this earlier full-size design, used once the Model 2 existed so the two could be told apart. Collectors mainly sort Model 1s by rear sight and export marking. This one has the early hump rear sight used on the earlier production (the smaller rear sight shows up around the high 60,000 serials), triangular slide serrations, and hard rubber grips with the HS monogram. Serial number is on the right frame above the trigger. Crown/N proofs are present. It has retained about 92% of its original bluing with a small streak of finish loss along on the left side of the slide, high edges, around the muzzle, and at the back behind the serrations. A hint of ultra light freckling on the straps, and a couple dings on the bottom area of the front strap where the magazine inserts. Minty bore, with very little evidence of use. Fitted with excellent period-correct black hard rubber grips. Comes with one magazine which has mild surface oxidation and runner marks but is otherwise in great shape. Includes a rare and highly desirable English market original box (these were never serialized) and similarly scarce instruction manual, both of which are in excellent condition.
