Description
8/22/25 - This is a nice example of a Colt M1860 Army revolver, manufactured in 1862 and chambered in .44 Caliber. The Colt 1860 Army was Samuel Colt’s most important military revolver of the Civil War era, designed as a more powerful successor to the 1851 Navy. Introduced in 1860 and chambered in .44 caliber, it combined the lighter, streamlined frame of the Navy with a rebated cylinder to handle the larger charge, giving soldiers more firepower in a handier package. The U.S. government purchased well over 120,000 of them during the war, making it the standard Union sidearm and the most widely issued revolver of the conflict. Known for its reliability and balance, the 1860 accompanied cavalry, artillery, and infantry officers alike, and countless examples saw action in battles from Bull Run to Appomattox. After the war, large numbers were sold as surplus and many were later converted for metallic cartridges, extending their service into the frontier period. Today, the 1860 Army stands as one of Colt’s greatest achievements, representing both the peak of percussion-era design and the revolver most closely associated with the American Civil War. This one is mostly matching, but the cylinder is mismatched. It is in fair condition overall with honest patina throughout from age. Nice period-correct wood grips - some light scratches and scuffs on the right side. The bore is pretty nice for its age - good rifling with very light surface rust throughout. Fully functional. No FFL required.
