SOLD - Scarce, V-Prefix S&W Victory With Factory Safety Replacement

2/27/26 - This is an excellent example of a Smith & Wesson Victory revolver from about 1943-1944. This firearm is unique in that it has an earlier V-prefix serial number, but was returned to S&W by the military to have a new 'Slide Action Hammer Lock' installed, which led to the addition of the 'S' in the 'SV' prefix in later models. It is reported that a 'V' prefix Victory was dropped on the deck of a U.S. Navy ship which caused the firearm to discharge and kill a U.S. Sailor. This incident led to the investigation and ultimate integration of the Slide Action Hammer Lock by S&W in September of 1944 for future manufacturing (starting at SV769xxx). In addition to the new productions, there were also the return of roughly 40,000 Victory models to S&W from the military for the revised part. Serial numbers prior to the new SV769xxx productions were stamped with the 'S' to signify the update, along with a small 's' towards the back of the right frame panel.

This is an all-matching and correct example. The top strap bears the 'US Property GHD' stamp, representing the initial inspection done by Guy H. Drewry, who was the inspector from 1930-1957. This revolver has retained about 95% of its original finish, with most finish loss existing as muzzle wear and high-edge wear. There is also a light turn line on the cylinder, and a wear line between the trigger guard and the front strap. Fitted with the original, factory-serialized grip panels that show no signs of cracks or chips. The 4" barrel has a bore that is bright with a mirrored finish and strong rifling. There are signs of light use. Mechanically sound with proper lock-up and timing.
