SOLD - Excellent 1945 Remington Rand 1911A1

8/5/26 - This is an excellent Remington Rand M1911A1 built in 1945 and issued to the US military near the end of WWII. This is a late, Type III example, the compact slide legend REMINGTON RAND INC. SYRACUSE N.Y. U.S.A., M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY on the right slide, UNITED STATES PROPERTY on the frame, FJA acceptance proofs (for military inspector Frank J. Atwood), and P proof marks. It has retained about 98-99% of its parkerized finish with only light finish loss on the high edges of the slide and frame, scattered surface marks on the slide flats, typical takedown scratch, and a bit of muzzle wear. Brown checkered plastic grips are excellent, but there is a tiny spot of compression damage on the left panel below the grip screw, and a nick at the very bottom of the right panel. Comes with one magazine, which is in excellent condition, besides for some runner marks. The bore is shiny with strong rifling, and just some minor frost in the grooves.

Remington Rand was not originally a gun company by trade. It grew out of the old Remington typewriter line, which had moved away from the firearms business in the 1880s, then merged in 1927 with Rand Kardex into a major office machine firm that made typewriters, filing systems, and accounting equipment. When the war demanded more 1911A1s than Colt alone could supply, Ordnance put the work on industrial contractors. Remington Rand took pistol contracts, and using a converted typewriter plant from late 1942 through 1945, managed to turn out roughly 878,000 M1911A1s, more than any other single maker in the war.
