Description
11/4/26 - This is an inert WWI German Stielhandgranate (stick grenade). The German stick grenade was introduced in 1915 and became one of the most recognizable weapons of the trenches, with its long wooden handle allowing it to be thrown farther than ball-type grenades. This example features the cylindrical steel head with its belt hook, stenciled "Vor Gebrauch Sprengkapsel einsetzen" (insert detonator before use) and "F.A.B." The wooden handle is stamped "5 1/2 Sek-F.A.B." for the 5 1/2 second fuse delay, along with "AK 820" and what appears to be a 1917 date. The threaded screw cap on the end of the handle removes to reveal the pull cord with its porcelain bead. The grenade has been confirmed inert. The head shows light surface oxidation and wear to the paint, and the handle shows handling wear consistent with age.
