Description

1/13/17 - Early Edo Katana with a highly coveted Nihonto Origami (Japanese Sword Authentication Paper) from the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (NBTHK).  The “Brown Paper” certificate grades the blade as Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Worthy of Preservation).  The Tokubetsu Hozon rating is the second of four current certification levels and is very difficult to achieve.  The Nakago (tang) is completely unaltered and signed by swordsmith “Echizen-Ju Shimosaka Kunihiro,” which translates to “Shimosaka Kunihiro, resident of Echizen.”  Kunihiro, whose original name was Shimosaka Gorobei, was a student of Omura Kabuko, a high ranking smith based in Edo (Tokyo).  Kunihiro worked in Edo and the provinces of Mito and Echizen during the period 1624 – 1661.  He is well known for the prominent Jihada (surface grain) easily visible in his blades.  The condition of this Katana is exceptional.  The length of the blade remains unaltered with a cutting edge of 26.87 inches. The Hamon (tempered cutting edge) is Gunome (wave of semi-circles).  The blade is housed in a traditional wooden storage scabbard (Shirasaya).  A rare opportunity to purchase a collector-grade Japanese sword with NBTHK papers!
