Description

10/2/24 - This is an original WW2 Japanese Army Officer Sun Helmet. These are often referred to as Pith Helmets or even Helmet Covers, as they were sometimes used as an insulation cover over the Type 90 combat helmet. This is due to their shape and design, which consists of a straw base covered in olive/tan linen cloth material. This example is in great overall condition and very well marked, but isn't without a few notable flaws. First, the exterior headband is missing, as indicated by the lighter-toned band around the exterior, just below the affixed brass star emblem on the front of the hat. Second, some of the stitching around the exterior rim of the hat, as well as on the interior lining is loose or missing. This appears to be honest wear from use, and the cloth is still secure and not falling apart. The interior features canvas web straps as a comfort lining, as well as original labels with kanji markings on them. The one interior seam with partial missing stitching allows one to view the interior straw base, as shown in the last photo. Overall a nice example with a more uncommon style brass star emblem (instead of sewn-on emblem) and a well marked interior.
