Description

2/26/26 - This is a near-mint example of a 1957 Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 29 revolver chambered in .44 Magnum. This revolver is a scarce 4-screw variation of the Pre-Model 29 that began shipping in 1957 until S&W changed it the "Model 29" in 1958 at serial number S179000.  This is a particularly rare find as this example comes with the original shipping box, direct from Smith & Wesson.  Additionally, this example was purchased factory-new by Robert Reed Kelley, Col, MD and he/his son were the sole owners previously.  This Pre-Model 29 comes fitted with a 6 1/2" barrel, target sights, serrated front and back strap, as well as a serrated trigger. The top strap has a matte finish with 10 serrations to stop glare while aiming. This revolver has retained about 98% of its original finish with most wear existing as a turn line on the cylinder, and some hints of muzzle and high-edge wear. Comes fitted with period-correct wood, target-style grip plates which show not signs of cracks or chips. Mint bore. Mechanically sound with proper lock-up and timing. Comes with Smith & Wesson wooded case.

Colonel Kelley was the practicing physician to Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, and was later offered the rank of General but turned it down as he wished to be a practicing doctor rather than be stuck behind a desk.  Kelley was living in San Francisco at the time that he began to build a collection of Colts and Smith & Wessons, and would practice target shooting at a range nearby after work every day.  He managed the Letterman Army Hospital, and while there, he became friends with all of the guards from San Quentin and Alcatraz prison, along with the Army guys from Benicia Arsenal.  He became known for his interests in these firearms, and accrued a beautiful collection of rare and exceptional pieces through these friendships.
