Description
4/20/26- For sale is an M1840 medical officer's dress sword. Military medical staff are officers but are also noncombatants, meaning that their swords are purely decorative and not intended for combat service. This sword is the 1840 pattern, meaning it would have been in service throughout the Civil War era. The blade has heavy patina with only shadows of the etchings underneath visible. There is no edge chipping or evidence of sharpening or grinding. One side of the crossguard has a shield with the letters "MS" for "Medical Staff". The rest of the brass handle and guard is intact with moderate patina and wear. The screw holding the handle together is loose and may fall off but the pieces can easily be tightened again. The scabbard has moderate wear and patina. The hanger hooks still have the knotted cord for attaching to a service belt. Overall in good condition.
