Description
2/17/26 - This is a nice example of a rare Argentine Nagant 1883 Revolver that was manufactured in the 1880's or 1890's. The model 1883 was the first of the large frame revolvers designed by the Nagant brothers. The 1883 showcased the new Nagant lockwork system, in which their medium frame design was adopted by Belgium and Luxembourg. They also developed a large frame model which was adopted by Brazil and Argentina. The factory in Belgium could not keep up the manufacturing numbers for these South American contracts so some manufacturing was outsourced to Simson & Co in Germany. This example is one of the Argentinian contract revolvers made by Simson & Co in Suhl, Germany. The Argentine adoption is evinced by the “Crown S” marking on the right side of the frame above the grip, as well as Argentine inspector marks (The L* in a circle) that are visible on all major parts such as the frame, barrel, cylinder, trigger, and hammer. This revolver is in nice condition for its age, as most Argentine Nagant revolvers were used quite heavily. This one retains 90+% of its original blue, but most of its straw on the small parts has since faded away. There is wear over the cylinder and most of the high edges. This revolver is all matching, and all major parts are marked with serial number 8994. Terrific, shiny bore. Original grips show minor smoothing on the right side but no cracks or chips.
