Description
1/20/26 - Manufactured in 1906, this is a rare and highly desirable example of a Single Action Army revolver documented as purchased by Wells Fargo & Co. to arm their express agency agents. It is all matching and has the proper "WF&C" Wells Fargo marking on the butt of the frame. It comes with a Colt Factory Letter that states this gun as being shipped to W.M. Ashton, Wells Fargo & Co Purchasing Agent in New York, NY on June 6, 1906, along with 11 other guns. On p. 105 of "Colt Peacemaker Collector Handbook and Guide" by Keith Cochran, it is noted that in the early 20th century Wells Fargo & Co. began arming all of their express agents and ordering large quantities of firearms directly from manufacturers instead of through local retailers. He notes that William Ashton, who was based in the company's New York office, was in charge of these orders. This particular gun comes in a wooden presentation case that is lined with ivory-colored silk and red velvet (the silk padding on the underside of the lid is no longer glued into place). It also comes with an original period-correct brass Wells Fargo & Co Express Guard badge - there is a tiny repair on the right edge. Overall, the gun is in fair condition with honest but noticeable wear throughout. There are small dings and scratches throughout and some spots of light spotty oxidation and patina. The grips have been replaced and embellished with embedded real silver 1906 Barber dimes - a nice touch to go along with this 1906-mfg gun. Unfortunately, the front and rear sights have been modified. The bore has pretty nice rifling for its age, but there is minor pitting throughout. Fully functional.
