Description
12/23/20 - This is a very rare M40A1 Clone USMC Sniper Rifle, with early USMC “Issued” McMillan “Smear” “Return” Stock and with USMC “Issued” Unertl 10X Sniper Scope with CMP Certificate. This is a total ‘spec’ build done by Dave Clark, retired USMC weapons section armorer 2112, at C & H PWS of LaBelle, FL, completed on 1/24/2016. Dave Clark’s reputation for his M40A1’s builds is well known in the collecting community and is renown, and he has since retired several years ago. Would likely be impossible to duplicate today, and is as close to a “correct” issued M40A1 built rifle as can be. Comes with a “Weapons Record Book” filled out and signed by Dave Clark, showing a test fire by Clark on 0/19.2016 of 6 rounds, with a total number of rounds fired and logged of 63. With a true correct McMillan factory “smear” USMC issued “return” stock, with unusually beautiful figuring and design. The USMC stock appears to be an early one, as you can clearly see the fiberglass mesh in the gel coat. The issued USMC “return” has appropriate wear and scrapes, but nothing excessive. It looks like one of the sling swivels may have been pulled out once and the hole was nicely repaired. Interestingly, the original stock has Win70 bottom metal and a Win 70 trigger guard, and the metal showing the “SUPER GRADE” markings on the bottom, which have been documented on some M40A1s, but only rarely seen. Stock has the original Pachmayr “cross-hatch” design brown butt pad, showing honest wear. Nice serial number on the receiver, 234495, which is very near most of the serial numbers of the real M40s from 1966 and 1967. With the “tombstone” style trigger group safety, as was used on the earlier USMC M40’s from the 1966-67 vintage Vietnam era first generation M40 guns. Action bedded into stock. Free floating barrel. Barrel marked “RTE-P” (meaning Rifle team Equipment– Proved”). Rifling in barrel appears excellent. The gun comes with an original issued Unertl USMC 10X scope. The Unertl scope itself is a rarity, as it was NOT sent to US Optics for the reticle modification (as was done to most of the USMC 10X USMC Unertls) (sometimes called the “garbage can lid” modification). This scope does NOT have the USO Modification. Optics are excellent. The scope was later sold by Civilian Marksmanship Program and the rifle is accompanied by the CMP sales Certificate which identifies the scope by number, to show the scope was not stolen from the USMC. The scope mount is a TMA - Two Man Attack reproduction of the original Unertl M40A1 mount. Also has issued M1907 style leather sling marked “MRT – 12-86” for Mold Resistant Treatment, Dec.1986, in slightly used excellent condition. Also includes a M40A1 manual.Specifications
