SOLD - Rare, Minty Commercial DWM Luger Rig - Von Lengerke & Detmold (VL&D)

3/6/26 - This is a near-mint example of a rare DWM luger sold in the US commercial market during the early 1900's. It was distributed by Von Lengerke & Detmold (VL&D), as evidenced by the marking at the back of the frame. This one is made even rarer because it comes with a VL&D marked H. H. Heiser Denver tan leather holster. DWM was the original producer of the Luger pistol designed by Georg Luger. Production began around 1900 and the pistol quickly gained international popularity as a military and commercial handgun. At the same time, several American importers began selling Lugers to the civilian market. One of the earliest and most important was Von Lengerke & Detmold (often abbreviated “V.L.&D.”). It was one of the most prominent sporting-goods retailers in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm was founded in Chicago in 1878 by Charles F. Von Lengerke and Henry S. Detmold, and quickly developed a reputation as a premier outfitter for wealthy sportsmen. Their store catered to hunters, travelers, and outdoorsmen, offering high-quality imported firearms, fishing tackle, camping equipment, and expedition gear. V.L.&D. was particularly known for importing fine European firearms—including DWM Lugers, Mauser sporting rifles, and other German and British sporting arm, which they marketed to the growing American sporting market. This particular gun we have here is all matching and in near-mint condition, retaining about 98% of its finish (just the slightest hints of high edge wear and a couple of tiny marks on the side plate). Bright fire-bluing and straw-coloring on the small parts. Fitted with like-new wood grips. Like-new bore. Also comes with one proper un-numbered commercial magazine (really nice fire-bluing on the retention pin).
