Description
6/25/26 - This is a rare, near-mint example of a WWII U.S. Navy Mark V Deep Sea Dive Knife manufactured by DESCO. Purposefully weighted to help WWII-era hardhat divers safely sink and operate underwater, these heavy, rugged knives were essential companions to the iconic Mark V helmet. DESCO, a prominent early diving equipment company that remarkably still produces these knives today, was one of only about five wartime manufacturers alongside Vince Forge, Morris, Batteryless Telephone, Bomar, and Schrader. This particular example is in spectacular condition, among the finest we have seen. The standard 6 7/8-inch blade is flawless, featuring aggressive saw teeth on one edge while retaining full factory cross-graining, with both sides of the blade profile perfectly intact and unmarred. The turned hardwood grip is flawless, showing no cracks, chips, or handling wear, and is capped with a pristine brass pommel. The knife screws securely into its heavy brass cylindrical scabbard, which shows only very minor age-related darkening to achieve a beautiful, light surface patina on an otherwise flawless exterior. Accompanied by a reproduction belt in excellent condition.
