The Sturmabteilung (SA), commonly known as the “Brownshirts,” was the Nazi Party’s original paramilitary organization and played an important role in Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Formed in the early 1920s, the SA protected Nazi meetings, intimidated political opponents, and frequently fought Communists and other rival groups in the streets. Under Ernst Röhm, it expanded to several million members by 1934, but its growing power and Röhm’s ambitions alarmed Hitler and Germany’s military leadership. During the Night of the Long Knives in June–July 1934, Hitler ordered a purge of the SA leadership, resulting in Röhm and numerous others being murdered. The SA subsequently lost most of its influence to the SS, although it remained active in Nazi activities, including participation in the Kristallnacht anti-Jewish violence of 1938, until Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945. This particular gun was issued to the SA Group in Franken, as evidenced by the "SA der NSDAP Gruppe Franken" on the slide. There are only about 15 examples known. Three of those are reported to be marked on the slide in the same serial range as this gun. This one is matching and has retained roughly 70-75% of its original high polish finish. The finish loss is concentrated mostly on the grip straps and around the high edges in general.
