Description
11/6/23 - This is a scarce example of a U.S. marked Stevens Savage Model 77E riot shotung, manufactured about 1963-1964. Beginning in 1963, the U.S. government purchased a total of 69,097 Model 77E riot shotguns from the Savage Arms Corporation for issue to the South Vietnamese Army; however, they were also widely used by U.S. Army and Marine units in Vietnam. Records indicate that 65,724 of the 69,097 Model 77E shotguns purchased under government contract were issued to the Republic of Vietnam or other allied forces. As a result, very few Model 77E shotguns returned from Vietnam, with estimates at only a few thousand. They have a shorter stock than other U.S. military shotguns as they were modified to accommodate South Vietnamese soldiers. They were also the first U.S. combat shotgun equipped with a rubber recoil pad. Military models are parkerized with sling swivels and wooden stocks. The right side of the receiver is 'U.S.' marked, and 'P' proofs are present on barrel and receiver. There is minimal finish loss on the gun, but the left side of the receiver does have a pattern of wear or imprint. Of the few that did return from Vietnam, many ended up at police arsenals in the states. This one is marked 'SCHP' on the right side, indicating it ended up with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Just a very uncommon gun with an interesting history. Action is smooth and bore is shiny with only minor frost. Stock has no major cracks or chips.Specifications
