Description
1/14/26 - This is a beautiful example of a rare and early Mauser HSC variant, manufactured in 1940. This variation with the low grip screw saw only ~700 commercially manufactured, all in 1940. It represents the earliest HSc's manufactured, as the revision to the grip placement on the frame had already been done before production began. This likely means these pistols were already in inventory at the factory and the replacement forgings would have been ordered before the HSc came off the assembly line. This particular example is completely plated in real silver and features incredibly intricate and detailed scroll/filigree engraving patterns. Could this have been done in the factory? We of course can't say for sure, and many collectors believe there are no factory-engraved Mauser HSC's. But it would certainly make some sense if this one was in fact done in the factory. Firstly, being such an early serial number, it would make sense that this one was pulled from the factory floor very early to fill an order (since the engraving process can take so long, sometimes years). Secondly, areas of the slide and front strap seem intentionally left blank, potentially to leave room for name engraving. Thirdly, this gun would've been purchased at a time when normal citizens generally weren't allowed to own guns under the Nazi regime, unless you were a person of importance. Fourthly, under magnification, the engravings show extremely even and smooth linework that typically indicates the work was done while the metal was not fully hardened. And finally, it comes with a presentation case that shows a quality of craftsmanship and attention-to-detail that you don't see often. In any case, and at the very least, we believe this work was done in the period and post-factory (definitely done by a master engraver, as you can see by the quality and detail). This likely means it was a special order for someone very important in the German sphere of influence in the late 1930's, early 1940's. The silver finish and engraving work is complimented very well by a set of real ivory grips. The gun comes in a beautiful and custom leather display case. The inside is lined with burgundy velvet, and the lid has a brass plate on the top marked with the Mauser banner. There are intricate floral impressions around the edges, and the bottom is lined with green silk. It also comes with two magazines that also have real silver plating on the bases. The gun is in minty condition with very little sign of wear. There are some micro-scratches in the finish here and there and some areas of minor silver tarnish in the crevices. Mint bore. A beautiful, unique example of this rare and early Mauser HSC variant.
