Description
10/23/26 - This is an as-new-in-box, second year production Heckler & Koch USP40, manufactured in 1994 and chambered in .40 S&W. This is a first variation example, characterized by the combination safety lever/decocker on the left side of the frame, which allows for some unique and desirable functionality. Without any modification, the pistol can be carried cocked and locked in single-action mode or, with the benefit of the decocker, in double-action mode with or without the manual safety engaged. The left side of the slide is stamped with the model designation, caliber, date code, German proofs, and serial number, while the right side of the frame is marked "HECKLER & KOCH GmbH / Made in Germany". The underside of the frame next to the serial is stamped with the maker and importer Sterling, Virginia, where most of these early examples were imported. The pistol is all matching, with the serial number stamped on the barrel, slide, and frame. Condition is near mint, with no external signs of wear or use apart from a small area of light staining along the top of the ejection port. The bore is mint. It comes with its original unnumbered factory box, instruction manual, Heckler & Koch lifetime warranty card, and two magazines.
The Heckler & Koch USP (Universal Self-loading Pistol) was developed in the early 1990s alongside H&K's work on the U.S. Special Operations Command handgun program, which ultimately produced the Mk 23 Mod 0. Introduced in January 1993 with the .40 S&W USP40 as the original model, it combined a reinforced polymer frame, corrosion-resistant steel slide with H&K's proprietary Hostile Environment finish, and a modified Browning-type short-recoil locking system. One of its defining innovations was a mechanical recoil reduction system incorporating a dual recoil spring assembly and nylon buffer to reduce recoil and component wear. The USP underwent extensive endurance and environmental testing, including over 20,000 rounds of .40 S&W without component failure, demonstrating the durability for which the design became known. Equally notable was its modular fire-control system, allowing multiple safety, decocking, and trigger configurations to suit different users and applications. This early 1994 example represents the original .40 caliber configuration of a pistol that would become one of Heckler & Koch's most successful and enduring service handgun designs
