Description
1/29/26 - This is an early example of a Continental Arms "Ladies Companion" Pepperbox, chambered in .22 short, which had the unusual design feature of a shield which encircles the barrel cluster, causing the illusion of the pepperbox having a cylinder at the breech. The right side of the frame has a loading gate cut-out, but without an ejector device. Total production of these was roughly 800, all in the late 1860s by the Bacon Manufacturing Co (using a differentiating company name to distinguish between these and the Bacon-branded pepperbox examples they also produced). This particular example has the serial number '128' which places it within the first year or two of production, and is has the matching serial number stamped on on the left side of the frame under the grip, on the right grip panel, on the backside of the cylinder, and on the trigger itself. This example is in great overall condition for its age, with an even brownish gray patina and light surface freckling throughout the metal. The bores are mostly excellent, with spots of very mild oxidation. Fitted with an excellent set of rosewood grips with minor surface cracks here and there, and a few scattered handling marks. Mechanics and timing can be a bit finicky but are mostly functional, and these issues are likely due to aged grease creating additional resistance. Please note that since this item is classified as an antique, no licensing is required.
