Description

4/4/24 - This is a very cool Springfield 1903 from 1918 in USMC sniper configuration. It comes with DCM paperwork from the 1950s stating it was sold to USAF Technical Sergeant William Robert Lane (later Master Sergeant). The barrel was made by Springfield in September of 1927. The stock is a Springfield stock and is likely original to the rifle. The rebuild proof behind the trigger guard is visible, with the original script proof mark barely visible just behind it. No other stampings are visible on the stock except the small letter "s" on the front tip. The rifle was reparkerized and rebarreled during a rebuild. The handguard is a Remington WWII handguard that looks like it was cut by the DCM post war. The bolt is a Remington 03-A3 bolt that has been polished and electro penciled with the rifle's serial number. The bolt closes on a Forester Go gauge and does not close on a Forester No-Go or Field gauge. The rifling is excellent, but there is a lot of finish wear at the muzzle with a fake star gauge stamp at 6 O'clock on the muzzle. The muzzle erosion measures at 0. The rifle has the national match buttplate and serrated trigger. There is a small chip in the stock by the top of the butt plate. The Winchester scope mount bases have a post-WWI black oxide finish. They're 7.2 inches apart from center to center, meaning the adjustments on the Type 2 mount are 0.5 MOA. The Type 2 mounts both have the November 5, 1907 patent date and have the white enamel markings that the military mounts had. There are no visible British or Canadian proof markings on the mounts. The scope still has the locking ring. The optics of the scope are perfect and the focus adjustment works well. The markings "75 feet" and "200 yards or greater" on the scope also have the white enamel, rather than the commercial-only red. The scope is stamped "H.G.C.1" which has unknown meaning. The scope has many characteristics of a military scope and functions well. The bore is shiny with strong rifling but some minor patches of freckling. Scope has nice, clear optics.
