Description
2/27/26 - This is an early example of a Smith & Wesson Model 1917 revolver from late 1917 to early 1918. This M1917 is all-matching (including the penciled grip plate), and bears the proper 'United States Property' stamp under the 5 1/2" barrel, and U.S. Ordnance 'Flaming Bomb' on the top of the left frame panel behind the cylinder. This was a short run between when S&W brandished an inspector stamp (SN 1 to ~SN 42000 generally are found with a 'GHS' inspector's mark), and when they began stamping M1917s with the Eagle's Head and S# stamps in April of 1918. This firearm has retained about 85-90% of its original finish, with the firearm showing muzzle wear, high-edge wear, and a turn line on the cylinder. There are small areas of corrosion and pitting on the barrel, front and back straps, the frame, and the top strap. The serialized wood grip panels are showing no signs of cracks or chips, but there is some wear on the bottom of the left grip panel. The bore has good rifling, but does have frost throughout. Mechanically sound with proper lock-up and timing.
