Description
11/4/26 - Offered here is a U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, complete with its brass-mounted black leather scabbard. The Model 1850 was the regulation sword for infantry and other foot officers from its adoption in 1850 through the Civil War, and Ames was one of the principal makers supplying them. The sword features the classic pierced brass half-basket guard with foliate scrollwork, a scroll quillon, a foliate-decorated pommel cap and a wire-wrapped grip. The slightly curved blade retains visible etched panels of floral and scroll decoration. The blade shows spotty oxidation throughout. The brass hilt shows an aged patina with the pierced scrollwork still crisp, and the grip wrap is intact. The black leather scabbard is solid and retains all three brass mounts with both suspension rings, and the upper mount is stamped AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS. A nice Ames-made Model 1850 foot officer's sword with its marked scabbard.
