Description
3/3/26- For sale is a vintage Winchester Model 98 signal cannon estimated to be from the 1910s. Winchester introduced the cannon to the market in March 1903 and it proved popular with yacht clubs, local governments, and private owners who used it for signaling or celebration. The cannon was designed to take blank 10 gauge shotgun shells and features a breech loading system like a real cannon. The cannon is about 18 inches long and 8 inches tall overall. The barrel is blued steel although there is wear and some corrosion/pitting. The pitting is concentrated around the muzzle/top of the barrel. The barrel is stamped with "Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven Conn. U. S. A. Patented August 20, 1901". There are also the safety warnings "NOT FOR BALL" and "10 GA.". Each side of the gun carriage says "W. R. A. Co. Trade Mark Registered In U. S. A.". The carriage is painted black with some spots of paint loss but no serious dents or spots of major rust. The firing mechanism is fully functional. The bore is dirty and could use a good cleaning. The original iron wheels have been replaced with modern plastic wheels. The underside of the gun has the assembly number "380A" which indicates overflow production of more than 1000 units, a feat mostly achieved in the peak years of 1908-1912. Overall in very good condition and a unique addition to any Winchester collection!
