Description

4/17/23 - This is an original WW2 Type 97 Japanese Naval Officer's Sword. The sword was originally handmade in the 1600's by sword smith Fujiwara Kanetaka (Kanenaka is another spelling we found). This family sword would have been passed down for generations, until a WW2 Japanese Officer brought this family blade to war with him where it would have been refitted with the scabbard, tsuba, and fittings we find today. The sword tang shows dark brown / nearly black colored patina and is hand-signed by the sword smith. The tang also shows evidence of having been shortened at some point since production. The blade is in great condition with a fine, yet still visible graining pattern throughout. The tempered edge is uniform and slightly faded, yet still visible. There are a few light surface scratches and some speckled oxidation throughout the blade, but no major issues. The edge has a very mild imperfections, but is generally in great condition. The tsuba has matching numbered washers, and the handle has typical fittings in great condition. The blade measures 54cm long, and overall length (not including the scabbard) is about 81cm. The scabbard is WW2 original and in great condition.
