Description
6/14/23 - This is an original T97 Japanese Naval Officer's Sword. The sword comes with an original polished shark skin scabbard, and features a blade marked with the kikusui symbol. A very similar blade is featured on page 294 of Plimpton's book. This sword has a sunburst pattern on the large spacer below and above the tsuba. The kikusui symbol is a 9 petal flower with singular "S" shaped river pattern underneath. There's some speculation as to the significance of this marking; some believe this is for warrant officer's, while Plimpton's book simply states these were used on certain Navy ships and submarines. The blade is in near excellent condition with a crisp, wavy tempered edge. There are some very mild signs of handling and some minor speckling near the edge in a few areas, but overall very clean throughout. The fittings show typical surface patina and light age, without any significant damage or notable issues. The hilt is Seki Arsenal stamped, and signed by Ichimonji, Showa 12 (1937). Note the mekugi is somewhat loose and can fall out easily.Specifications
