Description
5/16/23 - This is a fair example of a Springfield Model 1816 musket, dated 1838. A fine specimen of a M1816 musket dated 1838 and produced by the Springfield Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts. This original, 69 caliber flintlock longarm was once converted to percussion, and then converted back to cap and ball. Single shot, 42Äù long, round barrel. 3-line marking that reads ÄúSPRING / FIELD / 1838Äù behind the hammer. Front of hammer is the early ÄúAmerican eagle motif / USÄù in front. Lock has the detachable brass flashpan. The gun is in fair condition overall - there is not much actual finish loss, but there is heavy brown "attic" patina and splotchy discoloration throughout. There is some minor pitting around the breech, on the upper tang, and around the muzzle. There are some military proofs around the breech that are slightly obscured by the pitting. Excellent wood furniture, but there is a hairline crack and a small chip at the front left of the handguard. Smooth bore is fairly nice with some very light surface rust and oxidation throughout.Specifications
