Description
5/4/23 - This is an original Civil War M1860 Cavalry Saber. These swords were favored over the model 1840 heavy cavalry sabers because of the smaller, more manageable size and weight. The sword blade measures approx. 35 inches long, and the overall length (excluding scabbard) is 41 inches long. The blade is in great condition, especially considering its age. There are light traces of original finish and "shine" to the blade, despite the dark surface patina covering the majority of both sides. There's no deep rust or pitting however, and the maker stamp by Emerson & Silver is still visible on the ricasso. The other side of the ricasso is stamped "U.S. D.F.M." and dated 1864. The original leather stopper is still intact. The brass hand guard has typical surface patina and aging, along with some dark spots of oxidation and mild tarnish throughout. The original leather handle has a crack running down the right side, but overall is excellent condition with the original wire chord wrapping still present. The scabbard has rough surface pitting throughout and a crack / hole in the metal on one side, about halfway down the sheath. Comes with an attached leather hanger as well.Specifications
