Description
10/19/22 - This is a nice example of a Burnside 5th Model Breech-loading Carbine. Typically referred to as a Fourth Model and similar in that the patent date appears on late Fourth Model examples, this example has a guide-screw on the right hand-side of the receiver that prevents the loading block from dropping out of the action. The metal has retained about half of its original blued finish. There is splotchy thinning/finish loss, patina, and pinpricking oxidation throughout the rifle. The right-hand tang is marked "BURNSIDE Co PROVIDENCE R.I.". The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT MARCH 25TH 1856" and serial number "25397". The wooden stock is in nice condition. There is wear and use throughout the stock. The left hand side has a carved "MM" embellishment. The is a small crack to the left of the upper tang, but it does not appear to cause structural issues. The hand guard has been replaced as the coloring and finish of the wood indicate a difference in age. The securing screw also appears to be replaced as well. The bore is still bright but has frosting and minor pinpricking throughout, mostly concentrated toward the muzzle. Overall, an interesting rifle in good condition.Specifications
