Description

10/19/22 - This is a very nice Joslyn Model 1864 carbine produced for the US government during the Civil War. In total, 16,500 cavalry carbines were made under contract by Joslyn. The initial design from 1862 was met with mixed reviews and was improved upon in 1864. The model 1864's breech loading assembly was much more favorable and those carbines saw use by the Federal Calvary. The breech loading assemblies were impressive enough that 3,000 were purchased and used to make infantry rifles by the Springfield Arsenal, making them the first mass produced breech-loading rifles to be made by Springfield. This particular example is in very nice condition overall. The metal has retained a majority of its original blued finish. There is some thinning/finish loss throughout as well as patina and use wear. The walnut stock is in nice condition with handling wear throughout and dings in the wood here and there. On the right side of the butt stock there is a carved embellishment as shown. There is a crack in the stock behind the breech and above the hammer assembly as shown. The right-side plate reads "Joslyn Firearms Co. Stonington Conn. 1864". The top of the breech block shows serial number "5847" and the rear of the block has the patent markings. The left-hand side of the barrel has a "F.D.L" inspector mark toward the breech. The bore is still bright with minor frosting and pinpricking throughout but concentrated toward the muzzle. Overall, an interesting rifle in very nice condition.
