SOLD - Rare 1925 Simson Gewehr 98 rifle

12/5/22 - This is a nice example of a very rare rifle. This is a Simson Gewehr 98 manufactured in 1925. After the Treaty of Versailles signed at the end of WWI, Germany was allowed to make very few guns to arm their military and police forces. These Simson Gewehr 98's were the only authorized rifles made during the Weimar era. They are very few surviving examples. This one has the proper Simson proofs throughout and is mostly matching. However, the follower, bolt release, and bayonet lug are mismatched. The butt plate was re-numbered to match and has a WWI-era Imperial proof. The stock is waffen-proofed and is numbered twice - one of the numbers is matching. The upper handguard is mismatched. This one likely ended up at a Nazi arsenal during WW2. The stock was duffle-cut around the rear sight but was repaired. There is a series of obvious horizontal strike marks on the barrel in front of the receiver and a series of small dings on the right side of the receiver. The cleaning rod does not screw in all of the way. There is not much actual finish loss on the metal parts. There is minor high edge wear on the barrel bands and some thinning on the bolt handle. However, there is brown patina on virtually all of the metal parts. Spotty oxidation on the butt plate. The stock has been sanded, but it looks like the waffen proofs on the right side of the butt stock were taped over and left alone during the sanding process. There is a wood repair on the underside of the butt stock up against the butt plate. The rifling in the bore is a bit worn with pitting and oxidation throughout. One of the set screws in the floor plate is missing.
