SOLD - Early Colt Model 1848 Pocket Revolver - Type 2 Baby Dragoon

12/19/24 - The Colt Pocket Model of 1848, commonly referred to as the "Baby Dragoon," marks the beginning of Colt’s highly successful line of pocket-sized percussion revolvers, culminating in the legendary 1849 Pocket Model. This particular example, serial No. 9338, dating production to 1849, is a rare and completely correct Type 2 First Transitional Model, distinguishable by its oval cylinder stops—a key feature found between the earlier Type 1 models (with round stops) and later variations (with square stops). This revolver is in very nice condition for its 175-year age. It is all matching, including the barrel, barrel wedge, frame, trigger assembly, butt, and cylinder. The roll-engraved "Ranger & Indian Fight Scene" on the cylinder retains about 25-30% visibility, showing signs of honest wear but still visible with proper lighting. The metal has retained roughly 20% of its original finish, with a lovely, aged patina, exhibiting oxidation and wear consistent with its historical use. Brass plating on the trigger assembly and backstrap is thinning and worn throughout. Excellent mechanical functionality, timing is flawless and lockup is tight. The bore has very strong, well-defined rifling, unusual for examples from this period, despite some oxidation throughout. This piece represents a fascinating moment in Colt's evolution, produced as the transition from the Baby Dragoon to the M1849 Pocket Model began. Antique, so no licensing is required.
