Description
8/19/25 - This is a rare and desirable Colt Cavalry Single Action Army revolver from 1887. This gun is listed by serial in Kopec's Cavalry Revolvers book as having been issued to the New York State Militia. Many of the New York Militia revolvers were refurbished by Colt, and this is partially indicated by having the full six-digit serial number on the cylinder, rather than just the last four digits. This one is completely matching with a proper 7.5in barrel. Interestingly, the cylinder has two serial numbers on it - the matching six-digit, as well as a separate four-digit. This would likely indicate that the cylinder was taken from another example and used during refurbishment. Many of these also had the markings removed from the butt-straps, which were then resurfaced and re-stamped with the contemporary-style serial numbering dies. Colt also refinished the hammers with a "brilliant blue" at this time. It is "US" martially marked on the frame with mixed "DFC" and "RAC" martial markings throughout. Along with numbering and finish, the grips were refinished when Colt refurbished these guns and this is no exception. Left panel is RAC marked and the right panel also has a cartouche but no date. This gun is in exceptional condition for its age - better than almost any we've ever seen. There is somewhat scratchy wear along the barrel and some thinning in the case-hardening on the frame. Fully functional with all four "clicks". The bore is great for its age with fantastic rifling. No FFL required.
