Description

8/23/24 - This is a military 2nd Model S&W Schofield revolver in excellent condition. These were typically issued to cavalry troops due to their ease in re-loading while on horseback. This one went out west to a base in CA, but then sent to San Francisco to help control a wave of lawlessness in the 1877-1879 time period. The sale will include the article shown which documents this very rare variation. It has #42 on the backstrap out of about 400 that were sent to the local law enforcement group, given to them by order from Washington to the military units near San Francisco. The action is tight and the original finish is excellent; one of the nicest we have ever offered. It has all matching numbers and correct military proofs on several parts. The grips are both numbered to the gun and have a very clear and strong inspection proof with the year 1877. The barrel and cylinder show a lot of brown patina which is typical for this model. The bottom of the frame is marked U.S. and the bore is in excellent condition considering the age - shiny with strong rifling but a little pitting. Antique so no license required. Here is a video we did recently which featured this gun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNcEp8pE7Vk&t=247s
